Sir,

I have the honour to request that steps be

taken to select six mistresses and four masters, additional

to the six masters already on order

Owing to the resignation of Miss Brennan,

Department.

there is one vacancy on the existing establishment of home-

appointed mistresses.

Apart from this, it is considered desirable

to reduce by five the number of locally-appointed mistresses

on the temporary establishment, and to replace these five by

five home-appointed mistresses.

Excellent service is rendered by the locally-

appointed staff, but inconvenience is caused by the unavoid-

able resignation of its members from time to time.

In point of salary this proposal involves no increase in the Education Department Estimates for 1929 but it becomes necessary to provide Rent Allowance at $600 for the 5 home-appointed mistresses, and provision is being made

accordingly.

The terms of appointment and service for these

mistresses will be as noted in the revised memorandum enclosed with Sir Cecil Clementi's despatch No.77 of 9th

February, 1928.
